At Discover Yoruba, we celebrate not just culture, but the fearless creativity of entrepreneurs shaping new paths through tradition. One such story is that of Isa Mariam Abike, the founder of Raodatu Nisai Hub, a brand that is breathing modern life into age-old crafts while championing educational transformation.

From the Classroom to Creativity

Mariam Abike is a proud graduate of Lagos State University, where she studied Islamic Studies Education. But her academic pursuit doesn’t end there—she is currently conducting in-depth research on how to integrate 21st-century skills into the Islamic Studies curriculum. Her vision is clear: to modernize religious education and empower its graduates to be spiritually grounded while remaining globally relevant and professionally competitive.

This deep commitment to education is only one side of her story. The other side—just as inspiring—is her journey as a creative entrepreneur.

A Childhood Spark that Became a Lifelong Flame

Mariam’s love for entrepreneurship began in childhood. As a little girl, she loved to sell things and make money, and that passion was ignited during a family visit to her late aunt’s home. Her aunt had gifted her a handmade beaded bag and necklace—an unforgettable moment for Mariam.

“I told my mom I was going to make the bag and necklace myself,” she recalls. Encouraged by her mother and accompanied by her older brother, Mariam visited the local market to buy materials. She was only around nine years old when she created her first pink beaded bag—a beautiful but imperfect creation that sparked a lifelong passion.

Though she lacked a smartphone to document the early days, the memory is vivid. Even with mistakes, she persisted. By primary and early secondary school, she was selling her handmade beads to classmates and teachers—until she had to pause due to unpaid debts from schoolmates. But that didn’t dim the dream.

Relaunching a Dream with Purpose

After graduating from university, Mariam picked up her craft again—this time, with greater intent. Her goal wasn’t just to create beautiful accessories, but to fill the gap of unemployment, particularly among women. Bead bag making, though intricate, requires no formal education, making it a viable income source for many—even for the visually impaired.

Mariam relaunched her beading craft under the umbrella of her existing modest fashion brand, Raodatu Nisai, which she had started back in 2019 while still an undergraduate. But this time, she carved out a unique niche: focusing solely on beaded bags.

Solving a Problem with Style

So what problem does Raodatu Nisai Hub solve? Uniqueness.

“In a sea of leather bags,” Mariam says, “my beaded bags make my customers stand out.” Each design is handcrafted to be distinctive—fashion that doesn’t blend in, but boldly declares individuality. Her designs often become conversation starters at events, making her customers the center of attention.

But it’s more than just aesthetics. Through her craft, Mariam is actively training others, creating job opportunities, and helping women see that they can be both modest and fashionable.

What Customers Are Saying

Customer reviews pour in regularly, but one stood out to Mariam—a touching note from Dr. Lawal A. Fatimah:

“A lot of other people carried beaded bags, but none caught attention like the one from Raodatu Nisai.
Your hands are blessed, sis.
May Allah continue to bless and elevate your business.
May He take you to places better than your imaginations, bi idhnillah.”

Feedback like this fuels Mariam’s drive and keeps her going even on the toughest days.

Advice to Fellow Entrepreneurs

Mariam’s advice to aspiring creatives and business owners is golden:
“Stay consistent and be original.”

She believes that in a world of trends and imitations, authenticity will always shine through. And as for the durability of her beaded bags? “They’re not delicate,” she says. “They last 10 years or more, and 90% of beads can be washed with water without fading.”

Yoruba Culture and Fashion

Mariam is proud of how her work aligns with Yoruba cultural values. “Yoruba culture supports fashion,” she explains. “For beads, we call it ìlẹ̀kẹ̀, and it’s used in both traditional and contemporary fashion.” Her work is a reflection of that cultural blend—deeply rooted yet ever-evolving.

Raodatu Nisai Hub is more than a fashion brand. It’s a movement—empowering women, celebrating culture, and creating beauty, one bead at a time.
