1. How did you first become interested in promoting the Yorùbá language?
I have always loved the Yorùbá language, both consciously and unconsciously, as it was the primary language I spoke growing up. Speaking Yorùbá came naturally to me, and I used it more frequently than English. For much of my life, I assumed everyone understood it, so I spoke it everywhere without hesitation.
My decision to promote Yorùbá on social media stemmed from the negative perception I noticed around the language. Some people view Yorùbá speakers as either “local,” uncivilized, or incapable of speaking English fluently. I wanted to challenge this stereotype and show the world that speaking my native language or embracing my culture doesn’t diminish me in any way. Instead, it’s a strength and a source of pride.
2. What are some of the unique challenges and opportunities you’ve encountered in your efforts to promote Yorùbá?
One significant challenge was reaching non-speakers who showed interest in learning. This made subtitling content a necessity, ensuring accessibility and engagement. Another challenge has been the turnout for engagement, which can sometimes feel discouraging considering the effort that goes into creating content.
On the bright side, my efforts have opened doors to opportunities such as speaking engagements, tutoring students, award nominations, and building relationships with other ardent lovers of the Yorùbá language and culture. These moments reaffirm the importance of my work.
3. What role do you think language plays in preserving and promoting cultural heritage?
Language is the cornerstone of cultural preservation. It is the medium through which oral traditions, stories, and values are passed down through generations. Speaking a language is one of the most profound ways to appreciate and celebrate a culture. In my view, language is the foundation of cultural identity and heritage.
4. Can you share some examples of initiatives or projects you’ve been involved in to promote Yorùbá?
I’ve participated in several conferences, cultural events, and school programs aimed at promoting Yorùbá language and culture. Currently, I am working on a project designed to elevate the recognition of Yorùbá and enhance cultural appreciation, particularly among the younger generation. My goal is to ensure that Yorùbá continues to thrive and remain relevant in today’s world.
5. What advice would you give to someone who wants to learn Yorùbá or promote the language in their own community?
For those who want to learn Yorùbá, there’s no better time than now. Numerous resources are available, from online platforms to language tutors. Start where you are and stay consistent.
For anyone looking to promote Yorùbá, don’t wait for perfection. Your passion and basic knowledge are enough to begin. Along the way, things will become clearer, and your skills will improve. Most importantly, let passion drive your efforts, as it will sustain you through challenges and keep you motivated.
6. What do you think is the future of Yorùbá and other African languages in a globalized world?
The future looks incredibly bright for Yorùbá. I’m especially proud to see the world gradually embracing the language. From music to art to education, Yorùbá is making its mark. It’s exciting to see other Africans promoting their native languages too. The sky is truly the starting point for the global recognition of African languages.
7. In your opinion, what makes Yorùbá unique among the world’s languages?
The depth of Yorùbá is fascinating—it pulls you in and keeps you captivated. The more you learn, the more you want to explore. Every aspect of the language is interwoven with wisdom, insight, and intriguing stories. Yorùbá is not just a language; it’s a vessel of history, a fountain of knowledge, and a melody for the soul. What’s not to love?
8. How has technology impacted your efforts to promote Yorùbá?
Technology has been a game-changer. It has allowed me to reach a global audience and share the beauty of Yorùbá with thousands of people. Social media, in particular, has provided a platform to showcase content and connect with enthusiasts across continents. Technology is a powerful tool for preserving and spreading the message of Yorùbá.
9. What role do you think the Yorùbá diaspora can play in preserving and promoting the language?
The Yorùbá diaspora plays a crucial role in preserving and promoting the language. Interestingly, they often show more appreciation for Yorùbá culture and content creators like myself. By forming supportive communities, sharing Yorùbá content on social and public platforms, and staying connected to their roots, they can keep the language alive, regardless of their geographical location.
10. How can Yorùbá speakers around the world connect and collaborate to support the language?
Collaboration is key. It starts with forming smaller circles of like-minded individuals who are passionate about Yorùbá. These smaller groups can grow into larger networks, fostering unity and collective action. Through mutual support and shared resources, Yorùbá speakers worldwide can create impactful initiatives that benefit the language and culture.
