Diversity in Professions

The beauty of life is in its diversity.

Imagine how boring life would be if we all looked the same, acted the same way, had the same mindset, and did the same things.

Where would the interest and fun come from?

God, in His infinite wisdom, created the world to be multifaceted in its beauty and dimensions, full of different colours and styles.

Just as different tribes and nations exist, so do different animal species and breeds.

Even among the same people or the same species of animals, some differences still exist.

I said all of these to say that we were not made to be the same way or do the same things.

People were created to venture into different endeavours in life and make exploits.

While some people’s jobs and assignments in life may be louder or more aesthetically pleasing than others, it does not in any way make other people less important or useless.

Sometimes, people are caught in the web of comparison, placing their jobs or professions side by side with the jobs of their friends or even those of strangers they see online.

Many people consider certain professions very noble, and while there is nothing wrong with that, it becomes an issue when they use it as a yardstick to measure success and trivialize other forms of good work someone else is doing.

No Profession is Inferior

In many homes in Nigeria, parents used to demean any profession that didn’t belong to any of these four highly revered programs: medicine, law, engineering, and accounting.

If the children of some of these parents wanted to choose a career path different from these, they would simply not let them because they considered other professions inferior.

But with more exposure and access to technology, people are beginning to see that there are, in fact, a lot of other noble professions in the world. And people did not have to be lawyers, doctors, or engineers to live impactful lives.

The world is changing rapidly, and things are not the way they used to be before.

There are people who did not even have the privilege of getting a formal education, yet they put their heart into their handwork or skill and are touching many lives through it today.

As long as a profession is legal, lucrative, and impactful, you should not shy away from it.

If it helps you impact at least one person in a day, either through providing valuable service to them or offering them counsel, it is an important profession because, through it, you are touching the world, one person at a time.

What’s Most Important: Solving a Problem

Every profession that is legal has its own role to play in ensuring the smooth running of society and fostering a healthier and happier lifestyle for individuals.

People such as doctors, consultants, nurses, radiologists, psychologists, etc., who belong to the healthcare system contribute to society by improving the quality of lives of individuals, saving lives, and helping people to be healthy.

Professions relating to security, such as firefighters, security guards, policemen, and so on, work towards maintaining law and order in society and keeping innocent people from harm.

Some professions (professors and teachers) concentrate on enlightening and educating people, giving them the required knowledge and skills to become better individuals, providing solutions, and contributing to society.

In some countries, teachers are not paid well and not treated with the dignity they deserve, and this can deceive people into trivializing that profession.

Unfortunately, that profession being trivialized in some parts of the world is one that holds so much power and influence in other parts of the world.

Teaching people, building their minds, and influencing them is in no way a small task.

Looking at other professions like the fields of scientific research, engineering, technology, and innovation, people in these fields focus on making our lives progress through their innovations.

They provide solutions and help us understand the world better.

Clergymen and women help people feel a sense of connection to God and contribute to their understanding of Him.

It also goes without saying that professions in the media, arts, and entertainment world make our lives happier and more informed.

They enrich our societies with their creative productions and ideas and provide emotional experiences that we cherish.

The less talked-about professions, like the ones often ventured into by unskilled and ‘uneducated’ individuals, also contribute to the wholeness of our lives.

People who maintain the hygiene and cleanliness of the environment, run errands, work as caregivers, janitors, agricultural staff, and so on all serve a purpose, and without them, a large void would be created.

We are all part of one working system. Our contributions vary and may be needed to different degrees, but they are in no way unimportant or useless.

You should never let yourself fall into the trap of believing that your profession is not important or should be relegated to the background.

Do your Best with your Specific Skillset

What you need to do is put your mind and heart into whatever job you have chosen for yourself and be diligent at it.

Show up daily and give it your best by putting in the hard work and the smart work.

Strategize more creative ways to implement your work and ways to increase your value and expand your reach.

There are no limits to how far your profession can take you if you put your mind to it.

Collaborate and network with other individuals if you need to; take courses to sharpen your mind and get certified; seek mentorship; and learn from people ahead of you.

This is how to water your own garden and grow it into a farm. Be a person of value.

There are no limits at all. The only limits that exist are those you set for yourself.

Stop viewing your career path, business, job, or profession as inferior or unimportant. Instead, seek ways to amplify the value you already provide and grow where you are already planted.
